I haven't expected this side of Hong Kong

When people think of Hong Kong, they picture skyscrapers, bustling streets, and neon lights. But just beyond the urban sprawl lies a completely different side of the city — one of lush mountains, coastal trails, and hidden waterfalls.
I didn’t expect to fall in love with Hong Kong through its hiking routes, but I did.
One of the most breathtaking hikes I did was the Dragon’s Back Trail. Just a short MTR ride from the city, it winds along a mountain ridge with sweeping views of Shek O, Tai Long Wan, and the South China Sea. The hike is moderate, about 2 hours, and ends near the beach — perfect for a post-hike dip.
For something more dramatic, Lion Rock is unforgettable. The climb is steeper, and I arrived at the summit just before sunset. Watching the skyline spread out beneath me, fading into pink and gold, was one of those rare travel moments where everything feels still.
Other trails on my list: Tai Mo Shan (the highest peak in HK), Lantau Peak, and the coastal MacLehose Trail.
In Hong Kong, you can start your day in the mountains and end it with dumplings in the city. Few places offer that kind of contrast — and I’m already planning my return.
